Opening a shop means making dozens of decisions before the first customer walks in. Your payment setup should be one you can explain, budget for, and use at the counter. This checklist helps you prepare for a merchant-account conversation without relying on a headline rate.
1. Map how customers will pay
List the places you will take payments: at the counter, on a mobile device, through your website, or through invoices and payment links. Note whether you will offer subscriptions, deposits, or advance orders. Tell your provider what you actually sell and when customers receive it.
2. Match equipment to your checkout
Write down your current or planned POS software, tablet, terminal, internet connection, and receipt needs. Ask which devices and integrations are supported before buying equipment. A free terminal offer should be checked for eligibility, ownership, return requirements, and any associated fees. An equipment lease is a separate commitment to review carefully.
See our retail processing and POS options for the types of setup to discuss.
3. Compare the complete cost
Ask for a written explanation of percentage charges, transaction fees, monthly charges, gateway or software costs, monthly minimums, and equipment costs. Check the contract term and cancellation conditions. A low advertised percentage does not describe your full monthly bill.
For a new business, estimated card sales and average ticket size can help structure the discussion. Label them as estimates. If you already process cards, a recent statement can support a comparison; a statement is optional when you begin CCP signup.
4. Prepare accurate business information
Have your business name, website, contact details, products or services, and expected payment activity ready. Formal applications may require business, owner, and bank verification. Use the secure application instructions for sensitive information and watch your email for requests specific to your business.
Specialized products or a complex processing history may need a specialist account review. Explain prior processing issues accurately so the review follows the right path.
5. Plan the opening-day handoff
Ask who will help with setup, what training is available, how you will issue refunds, and where to find reports. Confirm the funding schedule, any reserves or limits, and support contacts in your account terms. Allow time for underwriting, equipment delivery, and setup before relying on a new account for opening day.
Start your CCP request
You can begin online without a sales call or an existing processing statement. Share how your business sells, verify your email, and follow your private application link. Final pricing, equipment, and eligibility are confirmed before signing; accounts remain subject to verification and underwriting.
